Living Tribute to Virginia Sue Evans

Virginia Sue Evans, 83, of Conway passed away Friday, July 8, 2005 at Conway Regional Medical Center. She was born November 20, 1921 in Danville to the late Carlee and Janette Evans.

She graduated from high school in Booneville in 1938, and received a Bachelor degree in Music from Louisiana Tech in Rustin, LA in 1942.

WW II started while she was a senior in college, and as soon as the Women’s Army Corps was created she wanted to enlist, but had to graduate from college and teach a year before she was old enough to join. She enlisted in 1943 and served 15 months before being sent overseas. She then spent another 15 months in the South Pacific, serving in Oro Bay, New Guinea and Manila, P.I. as a chaplain’s assistant. She also served very briefly in Nugsec and Biak on temporary duty during that time.

She returned home in December 1945 and spent most of the next 44 years as a music teacher. Two years of teaching were in Louisiana and Tennessee. Five years were spent in the Crossett Public Schools. The last 37 years were at Arkansas State Teachers College and The University of Central Arkansas. She taught 28 years in the department of music, full time and retired. In 1985, she was asked to come back and teach part time and stayed nine more years. During that time she earned an MA degree from Columbia Teachers College, in New York City and a Specialist in Music Degree from Ole Miss, Oxford, MS.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Edythe Evans Rexroad.

She is survived by a brother, Van H. Evans and wife, Lenora of ElDorado; 5 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 11, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Murray officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Booneville. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway.
